Exhaust system (49)

My new stainless steel exhaust system
I had an issue with the front muffler coming too close to the transverse frame in the engine compartment. It turned out that my original front muffler, as my original bracket, had a diameter of 10,5cm, while the new, stainless-steel muffler was 12,5cm in diameter. If that’s a difference between 219, 220a and/or the 220S/SE or just different production types I don’t know. I was not alone with having 10,5cm. Well, there was nothing else to do other than to get it into a decent position.
Apart from ensuring that the new front muffler didn’t get too close to the frame in the engine compartment, without creating tension in the exhaust system, there are no major problems in getting the exhaust system together. At least not if you have a proper car lift, which I don't.

Fixing the middle pipe, between middle and front muffler - before and after
A cosmetic problem is that the long pipe, which runs under the cabin, tends to hang too far down, especially in the front. You can see it on many Pontons. I therefore took the car to a reputable exhaust shop who cut the long pipe, at the bend that leads the pipe up to the front muffler. That way they got the whole, long middle pipe up a bit, while also improving the parallelism vs the undercarriage’s frame. They also made sure that the two parts that make up the middle pipe were better lined up than I had managed. In the photo above, the shortening at the bend does not show very well due to the angle at which the photo was taken.

Fixing the rear muffler’s position – before and after
After that, and a little better fitting of the rear muffler, the system got perfect.
See the Intake pipe and exhaust manifold article as well. You find it in the Assembly menu, under "Engine and aux. systems".
